McCain came up a notch in my estimation yesterday. This was an impressive moment for him, but also a confusing one. His campaign, yesterday, refused to reign in the vicious attacks on Obama and defended their insinuations that he has terrorist connections. The only thing I can think of is that McCain had a moment out there in front of that crowd and saw what he had created and just decided to go against his advisers and be a real man. As he said once before, "I would rather lose an election than lose a war." Maybe he saw the ugliness that he and Palin were creating and thought, "I would rather lose an election than be responsible for unleashing this kind of anger and ignorance on the country."
My advice to him now would be to throw all caution to the wind, since he's so far behind, and throw another Hail Mary pass. He should play the "Maverick" role to the hilt. Call a press conference and throw his entire campaign staff under the bus. Tell the country that he realized that he was wrong to follow their advice, and he will conduct the rest of the campaign on the issues which are far more important than the petty attacks. Then, for good measure, state that he is running against the Democrats but also against the segment of the Republican party that has been represented at his rallies during the week.
